Weathervane Investments is a Canadian private equity fund, backed by committed capital with the intentions of investing and supporting the Canadian mid-market business ecosystem. The founding Partners of Weathervane bring operational, transaction and investing expertise to the platform, with the intention of leveraging those skillsets to support businesses looking to reach the next level of growth. The family behind Westland Insurance, founded by the Wubs family, is the primary capital partner for direct investments in private companies, committing $100 million in investment capital to the fund. From humble beginnings in 1980 as a single family-owned brokerage in Ladner, BC, Westland has grown to become the largest independent, Canadian-owned brokerage in Canada. The Wubs family contributes not only capital, but operational expertise based on their experience of founding and scaling a private business and managing it through several capital raising processes, concluding with its most recent partnership with Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan.
Industry focus
Weathervane invests in established, well-run companies with a proven track record of success and a sustainable competitive advantage. The team has experience in a broad range of industries, including the service, manufacturing and distribution sectors. We do not invest in companies that are primarily focused on real estate, start up technology or resource development.
Investment criteria
Weathervane invests equity that can be used to finance a transaction (e.g. management buy-outs and corporate divestitures) or to fund growth opportunities. With committed capital of $100 million, and additional resources as required, Weathervane is looking for long-term partnerships. We are seeking to make investments in companies with operating earnings/EBITDA in the range of $3-$10 million or higher in certain circumstances, and a demonstrated history of past profitability. The team is open to exploring unique opportunities where there is a fit.
